Kalvin Phillips not included in England squad for March international friendlies, Jarrod Bowen called up

By David Ornstein

West Ham United midfielder Kalvin Phillips has not been included in Gareth Southgate’s squad for England’s international friendlies against Brazil and Belgium later this month, but his team-mate Jarrod Bowen has received a call-up.

Phillips was in England’s last squad for their Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia in November.

The 28-year-old, who is on loan at West Ham from Manchester City, has struggled for consistency over the past year due to a lack of game time.

He has been a regular in Southgate’s England side and played a key role in them reaching the European Championship final in 2021.

Phillips has endured a difficult start to life at West Ham, having been sent off against Nottingham Forest and substituted at half-time in last weekend’s draw against Burnley.

Bowen, meanwhile, has been in fine form for his club this season, having scored 17 goals in 35 appearances across all competitions.

Bowen has been playing as a No.9 due to a number of injuries to West Ham’s forward line across the campaign.

He received his first international call-up for England’s four UEFA Nations League games in June 2022.

Ward-Prowse and Phillips harbour England hopes - but their West Ham form is a worry

Aston Villa and West Ham told to pay £22m for ‘wonderful’ winger, only cost £6m last summer

Will Butcher

Last summer, Torino signed Raoul Bellanova from Cagliari and the Italian winger has been excellent since – having a hand in six Serie A goals and attracting the attention of West Ham and Aston Villa.

The 23-year-old, who has a huge 20 caps for Italy’s U21 side, has finally made a real dent on the top tier of Italian football after failing to do so properly, before. Torino chose to spend £6m on him last summer.

Now, Aston Villa and West Ham are interested – after Tottenham were linked in February. Italian outlet Toro News claim, as per Tuttosport, that Aston Villa and West Ham made approaches for Bellanova.

But, those moves were rejected in January. It is believed that Aston Villa and West Ham’s interest could remain, and the Tuttosport report states that a fee between £17m and £22m could be required for him.

Aston Villa and West Ham told to pay £22m for Raoul Bellanova

Is he really that good? Bellanova is a talent, described as “wonderful”. But, is he good enough for a jump to one of the Premier League’s bigger clubs in the form of Villa, West Ham or even Tottenham?

It seems as though he needs another season in Serie A, and to improve his numbers by some degree before he is worthy of a £20m+ plus move to the Premier League. But the potential is certainly there.

West Ham could do with an addition or two out wide, but Villa and Spurs have plenty of options on the flanks at the moment. One to keep an eye on, but a move this summer seems unlikely, at that price.
